Week 26 (Week 9 in Michigan)

Welcoming Elder Seeley to Bad Axe!

Yet another week gone by and the start of a brand new transfer! On Tuesday we picked up our new companion, Elder Seeley, who was also originally called to serve in Brazil, and was there for about 6 months before Covid-19 hit. He is a really cool guy and is helping me to learn more Portuguese as well! Even Elder Christiansen, my other companion, downloaded Duolingo and wants to learn the basics so he can come home and mess with his family. As for the Elders down the street, Elder Earle left and Elder Huntsman picked up Elder Sherman, and a couple days later Elder Corry, who is a brand new missionary! Elder Sherman himself is 6'3, so a pretty tall guy, but Elder Corry is 6'7! He's as tall as our mission president, President Heap. But now we have 6 Elders living on one street and one car with 5 seats... yeah it's been interesting working out the car situation, but we are making it work! Twice this week we drove down to Sister Pedinger's house to help her with some yard/farm work. The first time, we started working on a new bed for planting berry bushes, blueberries and raspberries, I think. We laid down some plastic sheets underneath and screwed together some boards to make the bed. Keep in mind that when I say we screwed the boards together, we screwed them in with one regular screwdriver because Brother Pedinger's power drill was dead. We then proceeded to dig up some good soil from some old plant beds and separated out the grass from the soil. It was tedious, but we finished after a second day of work, and also planted about 10 new trees too! It was some good hard work, which gave us a chance to get out of the house!

While walking around town this week, we saw for a second time a guy holding a sign for a department store that was closing soon. This time we decided to talk to him, and boy am I glad we did. He was very nice, and was curious as to who we are and why we walk around so much. Turns out he is a huge reader, as he had a whole satchel full of books, so naturally we gave him a Book of Mormon to read. We got his number and continued on walking. The next day, as we were eating dinner, we got a call from a number we didn't recognize. It was Ben, the guy we just met! He asked how we were doing, and asked if he could come to church on Sunday. We were in awe. "Of course you can come to church!". And he came! He seemed to have a great time, and afterwards we set up a lesson with him on Friday.

Unfortunately, this week a member of our branch passed away, Brother Bowersaux. I had never met him in person, but the members asked us missionaries to attend the funeral. You know, its been a while since I've been to a funeral, but there was just such peace in that funeral home as we had the service for Robert.

At one point this week, as well in the morning, the maintenance man for our apartment complex knocked on our door. It turns out our piping was leaking and caused the drywall in the apartment below us to break off in a spot. So he spent the morning fixing our shower piping. We were gonna ask to have him unclog our sink, but he had to leave, so he left us with some wire and some instruction to do it ourselves... let's just say it wasn't the most pleasant experience, and it made us very grateful for plumbers.
Beach day with the boys.

Fun car rides!

Overall this week was amazing! Today on P-day was very fun, going to the beach with all 6 of us. Although squeezing in the back was not fun. My leg fell asleep to the point where when we got to the beach I could barely feel my left leg. It's also really cool to shop with all 6 of us. We ended up getting a TON of groceries. But I suppose we also have more mouths to feed.

Anyways, I hope you are all doing well! Know that I am praying for all those affected by the fires, especially those back home in Oregon. It certainly is crazy all that is going on, but remember that God is aware of us all, and has seen it coming for longer than we could possibly know. I would just share with you some counsel that I love, "Be still and know that I am God". Even amongst these tumultuous times, we can be still and trust in God.

I love you all! And I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week. ~Elder Kasey Lightheart
