Week 30 (Week 13 in Michigan)

My Caricature :-)

Hey guys! How are you all doing? Another crazy week here in Michigan has gone by! From crawlspaces, to early transfers and football, this week was quite fun!

My companion Elder Christiansen is a bit of an artist, and is phenomenal at drawing caricatures of people. One of his traditions with each of his companions is to draw a caricature of them and give it to them. Well, since Elder Christiansen is completing his mission and going home in 2 days, he drew his last 2 caricatures for me and Elder Seeley. I'll attach a picture of it to this blog (actually my mom decided to place it at the top of the post), but man is it good!! I'm seriously so impressed by how accurate he can make the faces when he draws people. Like I could only dream of being able to draw that good!

This week we also had tradeoffs with the Caro district, and they came down here to Bad Axe. Mainly we worked on filming a new video to post to Facebook, but midway through filming this couple pulled up in a truck to the house (we were filming at the Saginaw Elders' house). Turns out they were the owners of the house, and just came to close up a few panels on the side of the house that led into the crawlspace. We didn't even realize that our house had a crawlspace, but they did their thing, and left. Well, I had mentioned it to the Saginaw Elders, but didn't think much of it. Next thing you know we came over to their house the next day and they set up a whole trail that led us to the garage in which there was an entrance to the crawlspace. It runs under the whole entire house! And, of course, they were just hiding down there, waiting for us. I guess it was blocked by a dresser that was just sitting in the garage, but it was a big shock to us all since we have had the Saginaw Elders in that house for 3 months now.

Finding our hidden crawlspace

We also had interviews with our Mission President this week, in person! It was really awesome to finally meet him again, and talk one-on-one. During the interview he asked me if I felt prepared for leadership, which I was surprised by, but I simply responded that I didn't have a lot of experience yet, but would be willing to do anything the Lord asked. Well, afterwards Elder Seeley told us that in his interview he was asked if he felt prepared to train a new missionary. Afterwards, we were pretty convinced that he would be training next transfer, and that I might go into some leadership position. Fast forward a couple days to Friday and we found out we would be having transfer calls that day instead of Saturday like normal, and would have our transfers the next day instead of Tuesday. It was all a little sudden, but we ended up getting our transfer calls! Turns out we had it flipped around, because Elder Seeley got called to be our district leader down in Caro, and I was asked to stay in Bad Axe and train a brand new missionary. We were a little surprised, but personally I am so excited. I've been looking forward to the day that I might train, and though it came a little sooner than I thought it would, I'm just so pumped!

Then on Saturday morning, we drove down to Caro with the Saginaw Brethren, and worked it out to have a few of us drive down to Mount Pleasant to pick up another Elder who would be serving in Saginaw, while the rest of us stayed in Caro. Then for the few hours that we were in Caro, we walked down to a nearby park that had a huge open field, and threw around a football. Eventually as well we played some 500, which was a ton of fun, and found a huge soccer ball hidden at the edge of the field. Naturally we kicked it around a little bit too. Keep in mind we only had our proselyting clothes on, so I'm sure passersby were very surprised to see 6 guys in white shirts and ties running around after a football.

Ice cream with Caro Elders

Interestingly enough as well, Elder Huntsman ended up getting moved to Bad Axe, of course very temporarily, since he is going to be going home in 2 days as well. So, as of now, I am living with 2 very "trunky" Elders, as they say. Tonight we will be driving down to Lansing to pick up my new trainer, and then early tomorrow morning I'll be driving these 2 elders down to Mount Pleasant to see them off. I'm certainly gonna miss them both so much, but I'm excited for them as well to move on to a new walk of life.

But yeah! I think that's most of what has happened this week. Its definitely going to be weird to finally be the senior companion, as well as to be in a dual companionship again instead of a trio, but I'm so excited nonetheless.

Last night with all the "Bad Axe Boys"

To end I'd just like to share with you a passage of scripture I really enjoyed reading this week! I was reading in the Doctrine and Covenants and I came across D&C 27:16-18, which talks about putting on the armor of God, "taking the shield of faith" and the "sword of [His] spirit". It really reminded me of a video made not too long ago by the Church using a talk by Elder Anderson, talking about Spiritual Whirlwinds of faith. Sometimes spiritual tribulations can come our way that take us far off of the path of righteousness, but if we put on the armor of God, putting our faith and will in His hands, then "the fiery darts" of the adversary shall be quenched, and we will have the strength to press forward, even amongst the storm.

I love you all, and I hope you have a great week! Take care!  ~Elder Lightheart
